TWIN-SEA project and overarching joint research structure

The TWIN-SEA Project aims at establishing a research network with German and Southeast Asian universities and practitioners for improving disaster risk reduction (DRR) and for developing “low-regret” measures for climate change adaptation (CCA) in the coastal zones in Southeast Asia and specifically Indonesia.
The project therefore deals with the systematization of climate change-related hazards (e.g. sea-level rise), vulnerabilities and risks in coastal urban and peri-urban areas. It also focuses on the analysis and evaluation of measures to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities and to identify best practice examples and low regret measures in the context of risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Knowledge gaps in the understanding of processes as well as application and implementation obstacles of low regret adaptation measures are addressed.
The TWIN-SEA network project facilitates the exchange and visibility of German research in Southeast Asia and supports the mainstreaming of climate change-related DRR topics into regional research activities, policy making and implementation. UNU-EHS takes the lead of the expert network jointly with with the Franzius-Institute for Hydraulic, Waterways and Coastal Engineering (FI), Germany, and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
